What is Germwatch?
Germwatch is a real‑time community illness tracker that shows local symptom trends based on anonymous reports.
Where does the data come from?
Data comes from anonymous symptom submissions, clinically‑designed syndromic logic, and automated trend analysis.
Is my data anonymous?
Yes. Germwatch does not store names, contact details, or exact addresses. Locations are blurred to neighbourhood level before storage.
How accurate is the heatmap?
The map shows trends, not diagnoses. Accuracy improves with more reports and validated symptom categories.
What illnesses does Germwatch track?
Respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurological, urinary, skin, haemorrhagic, rash‑related, heat‑related, vector‑related and general infections, as well as emerging patterns.
Why does my area show a spike?
A spike means several reports in a short period. It indicates increased activity, not that everyone is ill.
Can Germwatch diagnose my illness?
No. Germwatch is for population‑level trends only. Personal medical decisions should be based on symptoms and clinical advice.
How often is the map updated?
New reports appear instantly, and intelligence updates refresh daily and weekly.
How can I contribute?
Submit symptoms whenever you’re unwell. More reports mean clearer, more accurate community intelligence.
Who runs Germwatch?
Germwatch is developed by Premedical School Ltd with clinical oversight from a GP.
Is Germwatch an NHS service?
No. Germwatch complements NHS care by improving situational awareness of circulating illnesses.
Can organisations embed the widget?
Yes. The widget is free, anonymous, and safe to embed. See the Widget Embedding Guide.
How does Germwatch protect my privacy?
Germwatch uses neighbourhood‑level location blurring, does not store personal identifiers, and applies strict data‑minimisation rules to ensure reports cannot be traced back to individuals.
Why does the map sometimes change quickly?
The map updates in real time as new reports arrive. Sudden changes usually reflect fresh submissions or short‑term clusters.
What does each colour on the map mean?
Colours represent relative activity levels for each symptom group: red indicates increased reporting, yellow moderate activity, and blue low activity.
Can Germwatch show COVID, flu, or specific diseases?
No. Germwatch tracks symptoms, not diagnoses. It cannot confirm COVID, flu, strep, or any specific infection.
Why can’t I see exact case numbers?
To protect privacy, Germwatch displays trends and clusters rather than raw counts. This prevents identification of individuals in small communities.
What happens when I submit symptoms?
Your report is anonymised, categorised into a syndromic group, geocoded to your neighbourhood, and added to the trend‑analysis pipeline.
Can I delete my symptom report?
No. Germwatch does not store any personal identifiers, so individual reports cannot be linked back to a specific person for deletion.
Does Germwatch use my location?
Only a blurred neighbourhood‑level location is used. Exact addresses are never stored.
Why isn’t my area showing any data?
Some areas may have low submission numbers. Germwatch only displays trends when enough reports exist to ensure privacy and reliability.
Can organisations access detailed data?

Is Germwatch free to use?
Yes. The platform and widget are free for individuals and organisations.
Does Germwatch replace clinical advice?
No. Germwatch supports awareness, not diagnosis. Always follow NHS guidance for personal medical concerns.
Why does Germwatch track symptoms instead of diagnoses?
Symptoms appear earlier and more frequently than confirmed diagnoses, allowing Germwatch to detect trends faster.
Can I use Germwatch outside the UK?
Yes. Germwatch is a global platform and can be used anywhere in the world.
How does Germwatch prevent false reports?
The system uses pattern detection, rate‑limiting, and clinical logic to reduce noise and identify unusual or inconsistent submissions.
Does Germwatch use AI?
Germwatch uses rule‑based clinical logic and automated clustering. It does not use AI to identify individuals or diagnose illness.
How long does Germwatch store data?
Germwatch stores anonymised symptom data for as long as it is useful for trend analysis. Because reports contain no personal identifiers, they cannot be linked back to individuals.
Does Germwatch share data with third parties?
Germwatch does not store or share identifiable information. Aggregated, anonymised trend data may be shared with public‑health partners to support community awareness and planning.
Can Germwatch detect outbreaks?

Why does Germwatch track non‑infectious symptoms?
Heat‑related, environmental, and vector‑related symptoms provide important public‑health signals and help communities understand wider health risks.
How does Germwatch handle duplicate or spam submissions?
Germwatch uses automated pattern detection, rate‑limiting, and clustering logic to reduce the impact of repeated or spam submissions.
How does Germwatch decide which symptoms belong to which category?
Germwatch uses a clinically‑designed syndromic classification system based on established public‑health definitions and real‑world symptom clustering.
Can Germwatch be used for research?
Yes. Germwatch provides anonymised, population‑level trend data suitable for public‑health research, environmental health studies, and digital epidemiology.
Does Germwatch require cookies or tracking?
No. Germwatch does not use cookies, analytics tracking, or any form of personal data collection.
Can Germwatch be integrated with other systems?
Yes. Germwatch provides RSS feeds, JSON endpoints, and embeddable widgets for real‑time integration into dashboards, websites, and organisational systems.
